Merryn Gamba

 
 

Merryn Gamba studied at the Royal Northern College of Music under Anthony Roden and Teresa Cahill. She was awarded a major scholarship twice from the Dame Eva Turner Fund for Potential Dramatic Sopranos and received the John Cameron Special Prize for Lieder. Recent roles include Amelia (Cover), Simon Boccanegra for Opera UK, First Lady Die Zauberflöte for EPOC and Longborough Festival Opera and Jenny The Beggar's Opera (Britten) for Opera Project, Miss Jessell in Turn of the Screw for RNCM, Frasquinella La Perichole for Buxton Festival Opera.


A keen exponent of contemporary music and opera, in 2004 Merryn gave her debut performance of Tippett's Byzantium with the Slovenian Radio Orchestra, performed an experimental opera project by composer John Avery in association with Opera North and sang the Scat Girl Trouble in Tahiti as well as the Devil in A Soldier's Tale for Opera Project. She has also performed Hadewijch in Andriessen's De Materie;,  Magd in Sancta Susanna and Riot Woman in Turnage's Greek.

In 2004 she performed Raising Sparks under James MacMillan for the Sounds New Festival and at the Royal Academy of Music.
Concert work has included Dvorak's Te Deum with the BBC Philharmonic, Honneger's King David with Bollington Festival Choir, Berlioz's Nuits d'Été and  Mahler 4 with the Royal Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn's Elijah with Salford Choral Society, Dvorak's Stabat Mater for Altrincham Choral Society and Dvorak's Mass in D for Boston Philharmonic Chorus and Schoenberg's Cabaret Songs for Buxton Festival Opera.
