Guy sang as a chorus member or minor principal in numerous operettas when he was in his teens. However, he gave up his musical interests to concentrate on his career when he joined the Royal Air Force (which is where he gained his OBE). After a break of nearly 30 years, Guy returned to singing, first as a top tenor with the internationally-acclaimed Wessex Male Choir and subsequently as a soloist with a number of local opera companies. Keen to develop as an opera principal, he began studying with Debra Skeen in 2007 and more recently with Maria Jagusz.
In early 2008, Guy auditioned with White Horse Opera and was delighted to be offered his first major role as Danilo in The Merry Widow. Although he prefers singing tenor roles, he also sings baritone, and in 2008 sang Papageno for Kennet Opera in their production of The Magic Flute. During 2008, he also sang in a Masterclass with American Tenor, Christopher Swanson.
In a relatively short time since taking-up singing once more, Guy has enjoyed considerable success as a soloist and has won trophies in the Swindon and Marlow music festivals singing opera, light opera, lieder, and operetta. He has sung as a bass soloist with Newbury Chamber Choir and as a guest tenor soloist with the renowned Jubilate Ladies’ Choir. With the Wessex Male Choir, he has sung in Malmesbury Abbey, the Forum (Bath), Westminster Cathedral and Westminster Central Hall, performing alongside celebrities such as Hayley Westenra, Richard Briers, Jane Asher, Michael Palin and Phyllida Law. Guy has also performed in numerous concerts and, in 2009, as one of just three singers in a very successful recital for the children’s music charity, FreyaBeya.
In 2009, Guy was one of four tenors selected to sing with the newly-formed Royal Air Force Choir and also joined the performance group, Opera Piccola. A keen supporter of the musical arts, Guy is trustee, orchestra manager and second cello for the Wessex Concert Orchestra and is a member of the Swindon Recital Series committee.
